Japanese researchers on Monday (Jul 30) announced the world's first human trial using a kind of stem cell to treat Parkinson's disease, building on earlier animal trials.
The research team at Kyoto University plans to inject five million induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) cells - which have the potential to develop into any cell in the body - into patient brains, the university said in a press release.
The iPS cells from healthy donors will be developed into dopamine-producing brain cells, which are no longer present in people with Parkinson's disease.
Parkinson's disease is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects the body's motor system, often causing shaking and other difficulties in movement.

Drinking ginger tea could help people to avoid bad breath, according to research.
Gingerol, the chemical which gives ginger its spicy flavour, stimulates an enzyme in the mouth which breaks down the substances which make breath smell bad.
Sulfur-containing compounds from food can create an unpleasant smell in people's mouth, contributing to halitosis – the medical name for bad breath.
But gingerol, which can get into the body from eating or drinking the root, boosts the level of the enzymes needed to get rid of the smell by 16 times in just seconds.

Kellogg’s on Tuesday (Jul 31) said it has introduced improved cereal bags following an insect infestation in several packs of Kellogg’s Special K cereal bought in Singapore.
In a statement, Kellogg’s assured the public that their “number one priority” is the quality of their food.
"Our strong quality programmes identified that a small number of cereal bag seals had been weakened and may open when mishandled during distribution. We proactively addressed this issue and took corrective action and our food now has new improved cereal bags. There are no affected products on shelf," a spokesperson added.
