Singapore is heating up twice as fast as the rest of the world

The recent spells of hot weather that Singaporeans have been experiencing may not be just temporary heatwaves.

The island is heating up twice as fast as the rest of the world - at 0.25 degrees Celsius per decade - according to the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS). It is almost 1 deg C hotter today than in the 1950s.

Other countries already experience hotter temperatures than this - but the reason this spells trouble for Singapore, is that humidity is high here all year round,

“When temperature and humidity get high enough, our bodies struggle to cope,” he explained. “We get higher heat stress levels. It can actually be quite lethal for us.”

The Chua Chu Kang Secondary School student just finished his O-Levels last year and is currently waiting for his results - which he said allowed him to travel to the United States.

But the idea for his Newton’s Meter came earlier when he was back in India in 2016 when an accident happened which made him came up with the invention.

“Do you want to just park the idea to one side, or go all the way with it” - that was the question his business consultant father asked him then. And Siddharth chose the latter.

The actual device has an accelerometer to detect if someone has had a fall or crash, GPS for real-time coordinates and Bluetooth and Narrowband IoT to make the emergency call for help via SMS. This device is suitable for those who are living alone or in some remote areas.

Smoking - more places in Singapore prohibits smoking

Source: ST

My 2 cents:
The more you push someone, they will retaliate more. In a war, any war, nobody wins, but more by-standers will be hurt. The only solution is to hurt 'that someone' more than anything. The war should be with 'that someone' and not other people.

By banning more places is not the same as banning smoking. New places for smoking can always be found and shared. In fact, more may join the smoking group as it is also a place for them to interact. Why?

Did you read the news on Public libraries can also be gathering places for learning and sharing: Iswaran? Smoking places are also gathering places, and non-smokers are always welcome to join their talk cock sessions.
